Spring Splendor in Enchanting Provence
As I write from my home in Bordeaux, I reflect on last week’s happenings of my road trip to Provence. Each spring, just before the season kicks off, my Provence team and I spend time together discussing expectations and new additions to the upcoming season’s tour itinerary. We meet up with friends and partners to make final adjustments and enjoy some much-loved time together, laughing and recounting stories and other curious news over sumptuous meals and, of course, fabulous wines.Â
This 2024 pre-season was no different. The long winter slumber is behind us, and we were thrilled to reunite and share genuine moments of friendship before the arrival of our first guests in a few short weeks. Provence holds and will always have a special place in my heart. It was the region I called home when I first arrived in France as an immigrant 30 years ago, and it is the birthplace of my oldest child, Oliver. Provence is also the birthplace of my dream to become an entrepreneur, a dream turned reality, and with gratitude, I am blessed to share my love for this region to this day.Â
A Tapestry of Culture and Tradition
As the gentle breeze carries sweet scents of blooming wildflowers and buds of new life become apparent in the vineyards, my morning walks with my Shetland Sheepdog Koa during my recent stay in Saint Remy-de-Provence unveil the sun-kissed landscapes of Provence as the region awakens from its’ winter slumber. A fresh canvas of colors and scents unfurls before my eyes, and Koa takes her time to sniff the flower blossoms along our daily walking trails. A sensory journey like no other; I lose myself amidst the beauty of this southern region. This jewel of the south calls me home to its’ unparalleled blend of culture, traditions, natural beauty, and most importantly, to my friends who make this region even more exceptional than it already is.
The Provençal way of life is a harmonious blend of old-world charm and modern sophistication. The sun bathes the picturesque landscapes in a golden hue, much loved warm sunny days are here, and the flowering of wildflowers and poppies paint the countryside in anticipation of some of the most beautiful months to experience the region. But Provence is not only a feast for the eyes but a paradise for the senses. The tantalizing aromas of freshly baked baguettes and regional pastries waft through bustling markets, where artisans showcase their craft in outdoor markets brimming with handmade pottery, olive wood accessories, lavender and essential oil products, handcrafted jewelry, beautiful summer dresses, and colorful textiles. Lose yourself in the labyrinthine alleys of ancient villages, where the spirit of creativity thrives amidst a backdrop of sun-drenched stone walls and blooming bougainvillea.
Inspiration and Artistry: In the Footsteps of Van Gogh
Provence has long been a muse for artists and writers, including the legendary Vincent van Gogh. The vibrant colors of poppies and lavender fields inspired some of his most iconic works, and visitors can follow in his footsteps in Saint-Remy-de-Provence, where he spent time at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum. The spirit of Van Gogh lingers in the air, whispering tales of artistic inspiration that once graced the cobbled streets of both Saint Remy and Arles. Follow in the footsteps of the iconic artist as you explore the landscapes that inspired his masterpieces, feeling a connection to a creative legacy that continues to shape Provence’s artistic identity to this day.
A Palette of Colors and Inspiration
Venture further into the heart of Provence, and you’ll discover the charming villages of the Alpilles and Luberon. Two of my favorite picturesque villages, Gordes and Roussillon, exude a timeless charm that captures the essence of Provence, each with its unique character and story to tell. Wandering through their narrow streets and sun-drenched squares, you’ll discover a world where history and culture intertwine seamlessly. Walking through sun-kissed vineyards sprinkled in the valley beneath these perfectly perched villages of the Luberon, you feel a sense of connection to a place where history, culture, and natural beauty intertwine to create a truly unforgettable experience. Provence is a land of contrasts and harmonies, where past and present converge to form a patchwork of experiences that speak to the soul.
A Gastronomic Paradise
Provence’s culinary traditions are as rich and varied as its landscapes and artistic influence. From the world-renowned wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape to the tantalizing flavors of bouillabaisse in Cassis, Provence is a paradise for food and wine enthusiasts. Indulge in the velvety richness of creamy goat cheese, savor the delicate sweetness of spring fruits and vegetables delicately prepared to grace our plates at mealtime. Raise a glass of exquisite local wine to toast to the beauty of shared moments. Provence’s cuisine is a celebration of seasonal ingredients and time-honored recipes passed down through generations, inviting you to savor each bite as a tribute to the region’s gastronomic heritage.
